Pause on that for the moment if you have been seeing
the same security errors as I described. Because it
might now be redundant (till we hit the next problem,
then the files might be slightly different..)

Short question, long answer[1]. (Which I do not
have time to cover at this instant) ..but one
of the first steps is to 'jar' your applet class.

No. My own software suite uses a self signed
certificate and that works just fine.

Not necessarily. Andrey K. (Imagero Image Reader and
such) was telling me recently that he was using a
Thawte certificate obtained through a process by
which it was free.
[1] Unless you have a mighty powerful IDE that does it all
for you, in which case, I'd be telling you to ask the IDE
how to do the 'magic button' thing - ATFF1 ( Ask the fine
help key ;-).
