I am not terribly well versed on the best books,
I am hoping others might potter along to give advice.
Though you might have a look through the list compiled by
TechBookReport mentioned earlier. I have noticed that
person takes a particular interest in good books for
learning Java and has put the benefit of that knowledge
on the link they gave earlier.

Flash is actually a good language for game making, but
then, so is Java (both Applets and desktop applications).

Whether or not Java is the perfect teaching language
depends on the person, and you might find it best to
pursue Java first. Just make sure you consider your options
and where you want to go with it (are you looking to get
employment programming? Whole different thing.. etc.).
