It's more like when somebody asks a vague question. Instead of finding out
what they meant, with lots of possible erroneous assumptions, I ask "could
you rephrase that?". That isn't insulting, or threating a person like a
small child.

I'm getting more irritated by your tone here. Can't we just exchange
