If the entire computer really is freezing up, then that's more than a
little odd. It might be that there are still some remaining video
driver issues like those that plagued Java 1.4 with ATI video cards.
It's at least worth making sure you've got the latest version of the
video card drivers installed.
Aside from that, look for other problems with privileged code such as
device drivers or the operating system kernel. A Java process would not
by itself even have the ability to bring down the whole operating
system.
