to return a null object:
return null; //easy, eh?
but this line:
if(bankAccounts.elementAt(x) == accountNumber)
will never evaluate to true because a BankAccount is not a long
perhaps you meant something like:
if(bankAccounts.elementAt(x).getAccountNumber() == accountNumber) ...
.
