Totally unnecessary to apologize in that you provided enough information in your question. The whole diversion into the Canoe class was a red herring, and had nothing whatsoever useful to contribute to your question.
Normally, yes, one should provide an SSCCE. When one does so, one often finds their problem as they test the example before posting. However, non-self-contained examnples can serve the pedagogical purpose, as they did in your particular question. Sure, I could have substituted "String" for "Canoe" if I really felt the need to compile your sample, but it was so clearly not intended to be compilable as such that there was no reason to bother myself or you about it.
