Your choice of database selection is an odd coincidence. A little while
back, I posted a question in comp.lang.java.programmer about a problem I
was having reading data in a Java program from a MySQL database. As well
as answers to that question, I got advice against MySQL. After some more
discussion, I switched to PostgreSQL.

You still don't know how to do it with MySQL. Yeah, be real proud of
that.
Thanks. I do take pride in exercising good judgment when deciding how to
spend my study time.

Back in the dark ages, when I was learning Fortran, I really wanted to
learn all about computers. Since then, the amount of information covered
by "all about computers" has grown so fast that I long ago gave up on
learning everything.

Instead, I try to work out what things I most need to know for my
current objectives, plus the things that happen to interest me, and
concentrate on those.

I know the nature of the problem I was having with MySQL, and where to
find a link to a page discussing a possible work-around. That is all I
need on that subject unless or until I have to do something similar with
MySQL.

"I try to work out what things I most need to know for my current
objectives." That is exactly what I am trying to do. However, some
have posted on objectives that are not my own. My current objective is
to compare strings and ints. Any "help" that doesn't address that
objective is not help. I am a junior in CS. I have some experience
with C++, Fortran, Javascript, and PHP. I don't feel that I am some
high school kid that needs a lecture on OOD and interface. I don't
need to be second guessed about what I am doing. If you don't think I
know what I am doing, then fine, I couldn't care less. But at least
have the decency to either address my issue or remain silent. Don't
treat me as though I don't know what I really want.

You freely admit you are a junior in CS (and judging by the lexical
comparison mistake you made, I will gladly believe that), and still you
have such an attitude against people who have a lot more experience than
you? (Myself excluded, since I'm still studying. Which is one of the
reasons I'm following this newsgroup.)

I believe you'll agree with me that the original example code you posted
is a very bad substitute for -say- a list or menu? Unfortunately a
miscommunication occurred because *you* forgot to mention that your code
was just an example. we, and I believe I speak for everyone in this
thread, assumed that example was your real problem. So everyone here
jumped at the opportunity to help you design a better solution to the
problem. All you can do is go thrashing about how unhelpful people in
this thread are, and how they keep taking sideways instead of attacking
the problem at hand. Well, considering the fact that *you* caused the
miscommunication, you have not the slightest right to talk negatively
about the people who tried to help you --and you don't need a degree in
CS to understand *that*.

Personally I think you're only making the situation worse. It appears as
if you think the whole world spins around you, and your personal
problems. Interestingly, you seem to have figured it all out; what goes
wrong in IT is the unhelpfulness of the entire sector! I believe you got
the wrong end in this one. To my knowledge kind people with problems
have always been helped by the people in this board. So perhaps that's
something for you to reflect on.

Kind regards,
heAzk

All I have said from the beginning is that if you are going to post a
reply, please make sure it is on topic. Even after I pointed out my
mistake in communication, the attitudes didn't change. I can
understand all the posts before I made the correction. Up until that
point, it was my fault. But instead of you saying "Oh okay, since you
corrected yourself, I can see where I was off-topic. Here is the
answer to your question." some of you continue to defend posts about
user interface or program design. You continue to spin it so that some
non-relevant discussion of interfaces, is more important than my
question or that the purpose of comp.lang.java.help is to design
everyone's program for them; and when that fails, you just put the
blame all on me, as though a miscommunication in the beginning
absolves you of any ability to correct the issue now. At least I was
adult enough to recognize where I went wrong in my communication,
admitted it and corrected it. I can't say the same for some of the
posters. Some of you just aren't willing to admit that your posts were
not helpful, even if I I made a mistake. Simply opening your mouth and
saying the first thing that comes to mind, does not constitute "help."
Perhaps it is you who should reflect on that.
