My first reaction to the was "Yuck another spammy ad." My scone was,
"Hey, these things are free. What's not to like?"

Whats not to like is that one or more of those e-books seem to be illegally redistributed copyright works?

I googled for one title - it was an Apress.com e-book selling for $25.

Surely, if you want the authors to think it worthwhile spending time bringing books up to date in future, you might prefer to go to the Apress website and purchase the ebooks. I'd do that rather than participating in something that many authors probably consider to be morally equivalent to theft.


so I am actuallt downloading something from that site.

But there is a dark side: downloading from this site is slower than
continental drift. I have about 6MB to download, and my browser tells
me it will take more than an hour. Yipes. I remember this kind of
thing from 1994, before I got a DSL connection.


The dark side is that people rip-off book authors in this way.
