probably not the latest version, but isn't jdk5 and jdk6 in multiverse?
Or do you *really* need the latest version?

Hi Mark,

I did end up using Synaptic to install it. The reason I wanted to use
the download package was so that I could control where the jdk was
installed. Also, it was a bundle with the jdk and Netbeans5.5.1

Oddly enough, I rebooted the machine, started up Gnome and was able to
use the gnome terminal the same way I was before.
