Newbiw installation question

Trying to install java on new dell running xp with service pack 2
On start up get "Couldnt find main class will exit"
Spent whole day on Java.com loading and unloading 1.6.0_02 offline to no
avail. Site verifies installation but fault still declared. Searched
everywhere for an answer and now banging head against wall. Surely it
shouldnt be that tricky to install?????
