I am currently developin a Java application that is capable of
shutting down computers. I would like to send a message to the
computers to be shutdown a five minute warning so users are aware

send a message a remote computer on a network.

No need to invent this wheel. Examples of existing solutions, there
may be others:

net send
cpop/jpop
winpopup/linpopup

Several of the windows-specific mechanisms are also available on other
platforms through the samba suite.
