Sang Shin is a Sun researcher and Java evangelist. He publishes free on-line courses on his website. These are hard courses and you will need to put some serious time into learning the material, but I've found the results worthwhile. I recommend his courses. (If you go to the NetBeans website, you'll see that Sun's favored IDE recommends JavaPassion.com also.)
If you like hard copy, I recommend Head First Servlets and JSP, Second Edition. This is also a fairly hard book. It's a prep for the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam and therefore seems much more complete than some other books I've found. It seems to be useful as both a reference and for the exam itself.
