Map labeling in Java

Anyone have a recommendation for an open-source (any license is fine)
third-party package that implements a map labeling of non-axis-aligned
rectangles with a fixed orientation?

I seem to recall someone mentioning a general-purpose geometry package
on this newsgroup some time back that seems like it might implement
stuff like this. I can't seem to find it now, though.
