Connecting with an applet throw a proxy

Hi !

i want my applet to connect to a server wich is somewhere on the internet.
but my applet may or may not be behide a proxy.

so my first guess is the only thing to do is configure the web browser and the java virtual machine in order for them to use the proxy.

but this doesn't work... anyone knows why or have any clue ?

thanks !
