Go to www.java.com with the browser that you are using to go to these
sites. Search for "Verify Installation" and click the link. This will
verify JRE its version you have installed, and if not, it will let you
install one automatically. Hope this helps..

Are you unable to run any applets at all, or is it just the chat ones?
Try http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.3/index.html - there are a bunch
of applets there.
