Oh! I didn't realise it was such a hard thing to achieve! And I must admit,
I'm still confused after reading most of that -

post on the forum that had referred to it (I recalled
it had been discussed on a number of occasions,
but have had no direct need for 'free space' type
methods - so have not gone deeply into it)

some Jakarta commons thing (? I thought I saw some
reference, in the thread).

people saying there's still a bug after all these years?!

(shrug) 'people' say lots of things, I think it partly
depends on their perspective.. (I tend to think of
it as a sorely missing functionality, more an RFE,
than any sort of 'bug'.)
