I use Comcast Cable and they have (at least access to) a news server. The only annoyance is that it sometimes gripes about my news client's need to log in via a new connection each time I move to a new message, and that Comcast will only support certain clients. (Outlook Express was the only one they mentioned to me, useless to me in my Linux environment and nearly so in Windows.)

Have you tried Forte Free Agent (or Agent, which adds killfiles)?
It can slurp all headers and bodies in a single session. IIRC it can be made to batch up postings too.
