write / read cookies from applet

Is there a way to write and read cookies entirely from within the
applet through standard jre api (without involving any server side
component) ?
(I need to drop a cookie from my applet, so I can retrieve user conf
next time he uses the applet)

if not,
through non standard api ?

thanks for help

.
