No, Blackmonk. In light of history and the fact that the evil MDC was
stalking John since at least October 1980, John DID need a bodyguard.

What the devil does any of this have to do with blackdown.org, Sun, Linux, and Java? Not only is this a completely offtopic response, but it's also quoting things apparently from another thread entirely. In fact about the only thing it has in common with the rest of the thread is the subject heading, and even that acts oddly -- it shows up as "Re: blackdown.org closes shop" in the messages summary and in my reply composing window, but as "Re: Gone for 28 days?" in the message viewer. The only other thing that fits in with comp.lang.java.programmer is the from line being a regular poster here. That too behaves inconsistently in Thunderbird -- it shows as Lew in the messages summary and when I reply I get "Lew wrote: ..." but it says "From: RichL" in the message viewing window.

Have I just gone nuts or has Thunderbird gone schizophrenic on me? Or is someone playing an elaborate and off-topic prank here with a little header wizardry? Given the rather charged subject-matter of the OT content I must say I smell a troll...but I thought I'd just about identified the local troll population and Lew had not shown up on my radar.

Re: blackdown.org, it's probably shutting down because it's more or less successfully served its purpose now and obsoleted itself. Now if only clinical oncologists would do the same by finding a cure for cancer my day would be complete. :)
