Huh? Let's take an example -- finding information about the "cd"
(change directory) command. "man cd" brings up the man page for
bash, since cd is a shell built-in rather than a separate command.
I certainly don't have the whole man page memorized -- if I did,
I wouldn't need to consult it, would I? -- so to me the sensible
way to find information about "cd" is to search for it
And hit every occurrence of a C next to a D in the entire document.
That would be a more convincing argument if the combination "cd"
were more common in English. I can't be bothered to find out how
many words contain it, or how common they are. "anecdote" comes
immediately to mind, but it seems unlikely to occur in technical
documentation. <shrug>
Slow slogging awaits.
Well, no. Six keystrokes total: /cd<enter>, followed by "n" twice
to repeat the search, and I was there.
Me, I prefer proper context help where the
documentation for "cd" would be on a page by itself that you could be
linked directly to.
"Whatever".
I would never claim that Unix is without flaws. But I find
its flaws less infuriating than those of Windows. Your mileage
obviously varies.
