Divide it into regions? Nobody said anything about doing *that*
before. And that would seem to cause even *more* problems. Apps with
half the normal screen real-estate, presumably in some funny emulated
terminal type that they may not have been specifically designed for.
Apps with half the normal screen real-estate, which had already been
cramped by the limitations of text mode, having even less bandwidth to
the human user than normal, and "normal" already being abysmally low.
Yuck!
I seem to remember there being some concern also about what would
happen if the process running in one of screen's regions were
producing output unattended. I tried this with a simple loop to
print the date/time every second, and it also seemed to work fine.
Sure it did, because nothing goes horribly wrong if this loop runs
unattended. If however something internally "comes up" and it requires
urgent attention from the user ...
