While OT (heck, this whole thread is!), I would like to mention that I have recently started work on developing Thunderbird in my spare time. Both of these features are on my radar of things to work on: they are bugs 16903 and 19442 on the bugzilla (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org). However, because of what you have said, they are quickly jumping up the ladder of importance. With any luck, they will be included in TB 3 when it comes out sometime in 2008...
Joshua Cranmer enters Valhalla.
I agree that these are shortcomings of T-Bird's filtering The cited features, cross-post count and wildcards (regexes?), and the "manage filters" navigation UI (who wants the newsgroup-specific rules first? 90% of the time you want server-wide rules) are my bugbears with the killfile capability.
But "pathetic" it isn't. Just immature and clumsy.
With simply the cross-post-count and wildcard features life gets much sweeter in T-Bird land.
