Eclipse does much more than just one job, of course.

No, Eclipse is an application framework.
There are several things with the name Eclipse. One is the application
framework. Another is the Java IDE built using this same framework. I
was referring to the latter. (There are other Eclipse IDEs as well, of
course, but they are not relevant here.)
The framework underlying it can be, and is, used for
other things, but the application itself is a Java IDE.
Eclipse /is/ the framework.
The framework is NAMED Eclipse. But the Java IDE is ALSO named
Eclipse, as its own splash screen demonstrates. And it was the latter
to which I referred originally.
You evil, vile foul-mouthed *cad*! How dare you compare Eclipse to
that execrable, wonky, awful-UI piece of legacy crud?
You better get used to it, as this is largely its intended purpose.
Replacing emacs and other legacy cruft with nice modern tools, and
further improving those nice modern tools, is its intended purpose.
Emulating emacs down to the nasty cruftiness most certainly is not. If
it ever does start going down that sort of road, I'm uninstalling it
and downloading NetBeans. :P
No. Read what I wrote again. We were discussing what I find
intolerable in a UI.
[calls me a liar and further insults me]
No. None of the nasty things that you have said or implied about me
are at all true.
