I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email and newsreader client. It sports the standard Usenet features, sometimes under slightly different names, such as "Message Filters" for "killfile". It lets you read news posts in arbitrary order: sender, subject, date, and with conversations shown threaded or burst. I don't guess that it's the best news client out there, but it's plenty adequate and available for both Windows and Linux. I don't know about Mac.
