It is silly little things like this that I hope will sell Java and
give it presence in the public mind. Bill Gates seems to spend 100 to
1 on making Vista look cool rather than behaving solidly.

All kidding aside, is Vista fragile? I know it's annoying, and I've heard no one speak well of it, but I haven't heard that fragility was a problem. Obstreperousness is the usual complaint.
Perhaps "fragile" isn't the correct antonym for "solid". Regardless, the only Vista-equipped machine I own is running Ubuntu and Java-oriented development tools.
Another thing that will help spread the Java gospel is rapid development of useful applications based on Java. Once programmers know that a language and its tools get them to the finish line effectively, they use it. Icons may or may not help that acceptance. If they do, I shudder to think what will happen if the COBOL crowd comes up with an icon.
