Perchance are you both touch typists, or otherwise fairly fast and automatic? (I know a guy who types about 40 wpm using three fingers.)
I often add a "g" to words that end in "in", I suspect because muscle memory has fused the "ing" suffix into a single motor act.
Perhaps the notion of a "-tion" suffix that has an attraction to such retention should be the focus of your attention for an explanation.
