NetBeans Debugger shows ??? for char variables

    I recently upgraded to NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 and now find
    that variables of type "char" no longer display a value
    in the debugger. The value is always displayed as: ???

    Anyone else having this problem?
    Is there a fix for it?
