can't get Tomcat 5 to work..

I downloaded Tomcat 5.0.27 from jakarta.apache.org/tomcat the other day,
but I can't get it to work.. followed all instructions (changed 8080 to
a higher no. in sever.xml, but when I try to get to it in browser I get
a 404.. ) I included path to root dir of Tomcat folder in env vars..
when I run startup.bat in DOS prompt DOS prompt simply disappears, what
does this mean??

I recently downloaded JRE and SDK from java.sun and have been compiling
and running java apps for a few weeks now w/no problems.. but can't get
this tomcat thing to work.. and where can I ask? why is there no
Tomcat newsgroup?? ok, would appreciate any suggestions.. thank you..
