NetBeans 5.5.1 Editor hiccup

I have been using NetBeans 5.5.1 for several months and have found it
pleasingly competent. Now when I'm in the editor (java or XML) I find
it will allow me to enter characters, bur not erase them with either
del, backspace, or ctrl Z.

To eliminate keyboard failure, I checked other input apps. like
notePad and Word (did I mention I'm using Windows XP service pack 2).
They work fine.

Logging on/off didn't fix it nor did a full power off.

Just prior to this failure I had been fiddling with the optional
editor and print text settings to get a 'perfect' page image. I would
reset this if I knew how. Could that be my problem?

I was enjoying NetBeans so much until now.
