Eclipse plugin

hey,
im trying to build an plugin to eclipse.the use of the plugin would
be
counting some metrics for .xmi files.ive never opened any plugin
before so any hepl would be very useful.i want to know how to start
it.what kind of plugin.where to extend the eclipse.thank for any
response.
