    If you decide to go with Java, you might want to take a look at
    http://fieldbird.com/JavaTools. Kids in the 8th or 9th grade should be
    able to understand it and might enjoy using it. It will help them
    create, compile and execute Java programs. It takes very little disk
    space and it's free!
