java.exe on XP

My XP system has slowed down a lot lately and looking at the process list it
seems the java.exe process is largely responsible. Can anyone tell me how to
turn this bugger off so it won't execute at startup? It seems to be using
the CPU on and off, so the graph has a sawtooth look.

thanks
