Ok Thanks for your input
the reason I held out against downloading the latest relese of jsva sdk
is that I din't know if it would be any better, but have checked the
appropriate forums and found that the 1.4.1 release exploited a bug in
direct draw with ati cards (rage mobility pro on my lsptop)

this is now fixed
