The network effects of the computing industry are only relevant if you
don't interoperate with them. Apple does, ironically, more seamlessly
than Microsoft. For example, Office works *better* on Mac OS X than on
Windows. That annoying bug where you open a Word document and see
formatting code, not your document, I've never seen that with the Mac
version of Word.
Since these "network effects" are essentially irrelevant to Apple
users, Apple's market really is comparable to that of a luxury car
maker - people who will pay a premium for a product with better fit
and finish, that looks cooler.
