Count nouns <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_noun> are modified by "fewer."

Mass nouns <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_noun> are modified by "less."

"Typos" is a count noun because you can count the number of individual typos.

One can speak of less water, less food, and less money, because these are all mass nouns. One can speak of *fewer* bottles of water, *fewer* sandwiches, and *fewer* dollar bills, because these are all count nouns. Similarly, one can speak of less stupidity, but one speaks of *fewer* typos.

Your google comparison is a reflection of the general level of grammatical ignorance on the net, not of correct grammar.
