This is of course false. Children begin to acquire the rudiments of geological and zoological understanding before they can speak. They know that rocks are hard, sand is loose, dogs bark, etc. before they utter their first complete sentence. That these studies have been greatly elaborated beyond a child's understanding of geology or adult folk understanding of zoology just argues my point; there are people who are more expert at all aspects of human culture, language included. It is these experts' understanding that is the standard, not folk ignorance.
