Sockets - Multi Threading?

Ok, I'm only relatively new to php...
Could someone give me the details of PHP's socket handling compared with
Java's? For example, does it have all the capabilities of Java's
"multi-threading"? if not, will php eventually incorporate it in the
future...? etc....

Any info would be greatly appreciated,
