imagecopyresized

Hi
I am trying to use the function imagecopyresized.
I am successful in resizing an image but it does not size correctly. The
origional image is approx 600x1220 and the resized image is 123x250 but
the new picture only has an area 123x123 with the picture in it, cutting
the picture, and the rest is black. Any suggestions what to do to fix
this problem? Or does imagecopyresized only work with square images?
