what is your apache log saying?
usually if it will not start it means you have not put your php.ini file in the right place or you have a directive pointing to an invalid path.
Check through your httpd.conf and your php.ini to make sure all is correct.
what OS are you using?

AFAIK Apache version has little influence on choice of PHP, except that 5.0.x may be slightly more preferred if you're on Windows and Apache2 as more work may have gone into thread-safety which is required for that platform.
Then I wish I could figure out why I am unable to make either
version run on my PC. Apache works fine. But I can never make PHP
run.
It's weird.
