MySql Alter table

I know this is Php group, but i am sure that you guys can help. I just
wana know, if i add more fields to a table in a live database, will it
affect any data that is being written at the same time? Take ino
account that the table i am altering will not have data being written
to it during the addition of the new fields. Thanks Wes
