It is called "courtesy". Most people prefer to read replies immediately after the post or section of post. That way it makes the most sense to them. There is no Gestapo enforcing this. The only thing that happens to people who are adamant in being discourteous when asked nicely to please not top post is that their posts make their way to the bit-bucket. If that is where you want your questions to wind up then, by all means, top-post.
