More likely you used an application which accessed an Oracle database and never have done any database programming.
I said I wouldn't respond. But it's too much fun to resist.
I wrote AiX system daemons that talked to Oracle, working over
banks of as many as 5000 slot machines at gambling casinos, where
every fine-grained nickel or dime transaction was recorded, as to game
played, machine played, casino location and time stamp.
....also rote Motif GUIs that maniputed accounting tables in a casino accounting schema with (as I recall) a little less that 500 tables.
I and a partner wrote the code that handled the awarding of Powerball
numbers (for a company that no longer exists, software no longer used).
Powerball numbers are handled like nuclear weapons: they cannot
be launched by one administrator alone. Two admins of sufficient
privilege must mark the newly generated winning number from two
different IP addresses. I remember we hacked around that so it would
be easier to debug (so I didn't have to walk down the hall every 5-minutes to ask my partner to OK a test platform Powerball winner).
At another job I maintained and extended daemons that handles burst
of as many at 5000 credit reports per minute, mediating tcp/ip traffic
between unix daemons and IBM/SNA ports of giant mainframes.
Several years of 3D data visualization with OpenGL and OpenInventor
on SGI machines, 6 years doing Tomcat Servlets that interected with
XML databases (SleepyCat and Exist)....which made it possible to design
schemas from a GUI, and automatically produce data entry GUI screens
that worked, and data query editors that went from point and click
to gnats ass specific answers, coming from complex, compound queries,
that included parenthesies over query clauses. Worked with Google AWT
quite a bit. That was buggy but fun.
What about you Gerry? You seem like a knowledgeable and capable
web programmer. Do you work in cubicle land? At a place where your
colleagues offer grudging respect, but snicker behind you contentious
back? Why do I suspect that?
