Problem running ./configure php-4.3.3

Hi,
the command $>./configure end prematurely with the
following message

>can't find main/build-defs.h.in

Any reason why this happens?
I am installing php-4.3.3 on suse8.1/linux with
apache2
Also it looks like that directory privileges are ok
"rwx"
both for the parent diretory of main and main.
Any help would be appreciated
