Fatal Error:Call to Undefined Function mysql_real.....

Hi,
I am running PHP 4.3 and MySQL on Mac OSX 10.2.8 UNIX and am getting
error in my browser when uploading a mysql_real_escape_string....Fatal
error: Call to undefined function...I have tried
mysql_escape_string...no luck

Am I missing something here??...any ideas??
