PHP Chat system advice

Hi,

I need to make a web-based IM in php which is integrated into Invision
Board.
The integration with invision is fine however the IM part is my reason
for posting here.

Preferably, I want to implement this using php. So my question is,
what would be the best way to do this?
I have looked into this somewhat and definately do not want to use a
flat file to hold IM/chat.. text, so is a database my only other
option?

Any help, comments would be much aprechiated.

Kind Regards,
Micky

.
