PHP and Firebird on Linux: help!

Hi,
I'm completely a newbie on linux, and I have to configure PHP and
Firebird to work togheter.

I know it's plenty of tutorial (well, it's not plenty but I founded
something) about new installations, but I have PHP and Firebird already
installed and I miss the interbase.so file.

I read somewhere that I have to recompile PHP in order to generate this
file, but I don't know how to do this! PHP version is 4.2.2; I've
already downloaded the tar.gz file from php.net, but I don't know how
to use it. I've looked in /usr/src for the old sources but they have
been erased: please tell me what I have to do with this tar.gz, I'm
stuck!

Thank you

.
