PHP cannot connecto MySQL

Hi,
I just recently download PHP 5.1.2 and MySQL 5.0 Community Edition. I
have a site that I run on PHP and MySQL and downloaded it my local
WinXP installation but the site cannot connect to the database.
I have added the appropriate connections, I have setup the database
with a user etc. I have read many posts that speak to the hashing
algorithm differences between the 2 which causes the errors however I
am not clear how to resolve the issue.
Essentially - the site just won't connect to mysql and as a result I
get a lot of php errors saying invalid resultset, etc.
Any ideas/suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Greg
