How do I download and edit a website?

Hi,

I've recently installed Apache, MySQL, and PHP5. What is the correct
way to download a backup of a website so I can edit it locally? I've
downloaded the www folder and I've unzipped the MySQL backup. Some
pages seem to look fine, but the links don't work, other pages don't
display properly at all. I don't know much at all about running a
server, or PHP, or DB's, so consider me a compete newbie!
