cannot connect to mysql from command line

hi all

i have some php installation issue on a preinstalled dedicated server.

i can access mysql through php via webserver withouth problem. and this
is what phpino says about mysql:

mysql
MySQL Support enabled
Active Persistent Links 0
Active Links 0
Client API version 5.0.22
MYSQL_MODULE_TYPE external
MYSQL_SOCKET /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
MYSQL_INCLUDE -I/usr/include/mysql
MYSQL_LIBS -L/usr/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient

when it comes to the command line.. eg i call a script like

# php myscript.php

i cannot access to the database anymore.. actually get the following
error

PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() ..

how is this possible that it works here but not there? and how can i
get it to work?

thanks for any help.
