PHP IMAP & HTML

Using imap I am able to retrieve an html email message, however when I
echo the message I get all the HTML tags as plain text.

Does anyone know how to either 1) remove all the html tags from the
email and just display the message text, or 2) display the html email
as html.

I am new to IMAP, so any examples on dealing with html messages would
be helpful.
